  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The authors reviewed 164 psychiatric cases of foreigners admitted in the emergency unit of Matsuzawa Hospital during the period April 1985 to March 1991 from the perspective of social psychiatry. We previously reported similar cases for the 6 years and 5 months from November 1978 to March 1985. Such cases have been increasingrapidly particularly since 1990. 82.4% of these cases were people in their twenties and thirties. The amount of time in Japan before the initial outbreak of the symptoms has become shorter, and there has been two peaks, the first less than one month after arriving in Japan and the second after more than one year. A large number of the 164 foreigners have been Asian (102 cases). 77 Asians have come to Japan illegally in the last three years mostly for work. Most of these 77 were diagnosed with fresh schizophrenia and so-called reactive psychoses. We discuss these cases as psychiatric problems of immigrant workers in reference to the concept of “Gastarbeiter” in Germany.
