  • Look Inside

A Case report was made of a 25 year-old housewife showing symptoms of systematic amnesia. She had no recollection of her married life and maintained to her husband that she was 17 years old. A comparison of systematic amnesia with global amnesia reported the following findings. (1) This case showed conflicts similar to those experienced by people who have suffered from oppression, or from the divorce of parents, or from leaving school etc, or who have been delinquents. Her personality was oppressive and showed prematurity. Such features are similar to those found in cases of global amnesia. Moreover, the recovery process of amnesia also showed a similarity to that of global amnesia. In spite of these conditions, she hadn't fallen into global amnesia due to the existence of a home she could safely return to. (2) As a mechanism of these symptoms, she regretted that she could not return home after leaving at the age of 17. Because of this, she hoped to rocommence her life after the age of 17. This accounts for her conviction that she was still 17 years old. Moreover, her emotional dependence on her father forced her to deny the existence of her husband. Such factors were probably responsible for leading her into a state of systematic amnesia.
