Even after the depressive state has been improved, it can still be difficult for patients with depression to re-join at work. The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effectiveness of 9-session weekly group psychotherapy on patients with depression. A total of 48 patients with depression were enrolled. There were 45 male participants and 3 female participants. The group psychotherapy involved 9 weekly 1.5-hour group sessions. The Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and Social Adaptation Self-evaluation Scale (SASS) were used to evaluate the patients before and after completion of the study. This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the University of Occupational and Environmental Health. The main findings were as follows:(1) All participants finished all 9 sessions. (2) 70.8% of the participants returned to work. (3) After group psychotherapy, the average HAM-D score and SASS scores were significantly improved. (4) 88.2% of the participants who returned to work continued working. These findings demonstrate that group psychotherapy for workers with depression reduces depressive symptoms and social adaptation and helps them to continue working.
