Recently, behavioral activation (BA) for depressed patients has garnered attention, and efficacy has been reported in a number of intervention studies for individual BA. Although the application of group BA has been expanded, validation has not been fully examined. In this paper, we developed and introduced a novel short-term group psychotherapy program, “KURE-ACTIVE,” for depressed patients. The approach consists of BA based on functional analysis of passive avoidance of particular circumstances. As a result of the application of this program, depressive symptoms and measurements on a BA index were significantly improved after the intervention. A long-term maintenance effect, however, was not found. These preliminary results suggest both the utility of the program and also need for modifications. Future research can investigate modifications that would improve the efficacy of group BA program.
