The aim of this study was to clarify the clinical features and trends of designer-drug-abusing patients through comparisons with patients who have used other illegal drugs in addition to designer drugs. We retrospectively researched 40 cases, which were who required underwent examinations at Tokyo Metropolitan Health and Medical Corporation Toshima Hospital psychiatric emergency in 2002-2014. Many of the patients were young male, and the rate of having experienced of compulsory hospitalization were less than 20% despite they had use other illegal drugs. The results suggest that the psychotic effect of designer drugs were stronger than conventional illegal drugs. The number of designer-drug abusing patients has increased from 2012, but it has rapidly decreased in 2014. Tighter legal controls may have contributed to a reduction in designer-drug usage, but an establishment of more comprehensive system for drug abuse prevention should be required.
