Aims:The study investigated that mental health in university freshmen affected approach to learning and friendship during the first half year and the second.

Methods:467 university freshmen participated in this study. They took UPI on April of 2013, and approach to learning and friendship scale on July of 2013 and January of 2014.

Results:University freshmen having tendency to depression in April had negative effects on voluntary learning, active assertion, diligent learning, friendship satisfaction, and deep acquaintance with friends during the first half year and the second. Mental and physical healthy condition had positive effects on active assertion, diligent learning, friendship satisfaction, and deep acquaintance with friends during the first half year, and diligent learning and deep acquaintance with friends during the second half year. Low group more than high group in UPI points had high approach to learning and good friendship.

Conclusions:Good mental health condition in university freshmen when they entered university affected approach to learning and friendship during the first half year and the second
