Serum specimens from 243 schizophrenic inpatients and 314 controls were collected for neutralization test of herpes simplex type 1 virus (HSV 1) with a cytopathic HSV 1 strain. The prevalence of HSV 1 antibody correlated with age and, when this was allowed for, no significant differences emerged between schizophrenic inpatients and controls, although the number of inpatients over 40 years old was slightly lower than that of controls. Geometric mean titres of HSV 1 antibody were slightly higher in inpatients, but the elevation was not significant. Furthermore, schizophrenic inpatients were subclassified into 295-0, 295-1, 295-2, 295-3 according to ICD-9-CM, and the serum prevalence and the geometric mean titres of HSV 1 antibody in each subgroup were compared with those of controls. No significant differences emerged between subgroups of schizophrenic inpatients and controls. The hypothesis schizophrenia through viral infection was discussed.
