  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Two cases of pituitary-dependent Cushing's syndrome with manifest psychotic symptoms are reported. The precipitating emotional factors as well as psychic states during illness and after surgery along with physical or endocrinological manifestations were investigated.

The nature and role of psychic factors in this disorder were discussed on the basis of the present findings and the preceding literature. The possibility was suggested that emotional stress could increase the number and heights of cortisol secretory surges or abolish the diurnal rhythm of ACTH-cortisol secretion, at least in pituitary-dependent patients with Cushing's syndrome. This would result in an increased total daily output of cortisol which could precipitate clinical manifestations or worsen the physical symptoms.
