This paper proposes, after giving a brief resume of the psychoanalytic theories of depression, that the clinical picture of depression can be understood as the reaction to the loss of an illusory feeling of unity with others or the world. Such an illusory feeling of unity with one's environment is originally acquired as a defence against early frustration of infantile dependency need and subserves the formation of a compulsive personality which, when it breaks down under pressure, develops a depressive reaction. Two clinical cases are presented to illustrate the above hypothesis.
