We conducted a case-control study of 12 psychiatric inpatients with water intoxication using 140 controls. The matching criteria were diagnosis and sex. We also compared the climate of the days on which water intoxication occurred and climate data for a one-year period. The group of patients with water intoxication used higher potency atypical antipsychotics (p<0.01), had a lower hemoglobin level (p<0.05), had a lower hemocrit level (p<0.01), experienced worse weather (p<0.01), experienced more days with precipitation (p<0.01), experienced less difference between daily maximum and minimum temperatures (p<0.05), experienced shorter daylight hours (p<0.01), and experienced a higher humidity level (p<0.01). The risk factors for water intoxication were determined to be bad weather on the day of onset and findings of hemodilution in tests before onset. If these conditions are not satisfied, water intoxication is thought to be less likely to occur.
