A case-control study was conducted on 33 inpatients with pneumonia in a psychiatric hospital during a 7-year period. The risk factors for pneumonia were old age (p<0.01), severe psychiatric symptoms (p<0.01), low body weight (p<0.01), low hemoglobin level (p<0.05), low serum albumin level (p<0.05) and low triglyceride level (p<0.01). The patients in the pneumonia group had been administered small doses of butyrophenone antipsychotics (p<0.05) and atypical antipsychotics (p<0.01). These patients also exhibited a lower total titer of antipsychotics (p<0.05) and a higher frequency of use of antiparkinson drug use (p<0.05). These drugs were thought to have been prescribed to avoid dysphagia. To prevent the development of pneumonia or its recurrence, it is necessary to adequately change prescriptions to to avoid conditions that predispose the patient to pneumonia. A comparison of the characteristics of risk factors for pneumonia and for neuroleptic malignant syndrome, ileus, hyponatremia, and water intoxication revealed that the characteristics of risk factors were very different for each disorder.
