Although numerous studies on methods for improving the medical adherence of patients with schizophrenia have been published in recent years, there are few available questionnaires for measuring perceptions of medication therapy in Japan. Therefore, we developed a questionnaire that measures the medication perceptions of patients with schizophrenia. A total of 107 patients (70 males and 37 females), with a mean age of 36.71 years, completed an original questionnaire that consisted of 94 items based on related articles. The results of an exploratory factor analysis revealed the following three significant factors:"drug efficacy", "worries about side effects" and "fear of discontinuing medication". Finally, based on the identified factors, the scale was reduced to 13 items. This new scale had high reliability and validity and was relatively easy for patients to complete. Further studies using this scale to examine the medication adherence of patients with schizophrenia should be conducted.
