There is a growing demand for mental health professionals including psychiatrists. However, the number of psychiatrists working at general hospitals is decreasing in Japan. Therefore, the gap between supply and demand for mental health services is growing. We reported how a multidisciplinary team including a psychiatrist, 5 medical social workers (MSWs), and a clinical psychologist assessed and managed the cases at a general hospital. In 2009, 193 patients consulted a psychiatrist, 1,743 patients were managed by MSWs, and 131 patients were interviewed by a clinical psychologist. We concluded that the concept of “chance loss” will be required for managing a multidisciplinary team in order to provide sustainable mental health cares in Japan.
