We examined the clinical effectiveness of and tolerability to high-dose (75~100mg/day) milnacipran in 10 elderly patients (age, 77~91 years) with depression (assessed using ICD-10). In Japan, the recommended dose of milnacipran is 60mg/day for elderly patients. Although all the patients responded to the treatment, the remission periods varied across patients.

Nonetheless, administration of a high dose of milnacipran did not result in any severe adverse effects. These findings suggest that high-dose milnacipran therapy may have a high tolerability and effectiveness in elderly patients with severe depression.
