The present study examined whether dropping safety behaviors ‘which play a role in maintaining social anxiety disorder (SAD)' in social situations reduces social anxiety symptoms. Twenty three students constituted the experimental group and the control group. After matching sex and age, participants were randomly assigned to the SAFETY group in which safety behaviors were dropped and the CONTROL group. Results showed that dropping safety behaviors decreased subjective anxiety and negative belief significantly after conversation. In the SAFETY group, the effect was larger than in the CONTROL group. This result corresponds with the previous study (e.g., Wells et al., 1995). It is revealed that dropping safety behaviors which SAD patients use is a more effective treatment to improve social anxiety symptoms in Japan.
