Summary

An investigation using EuroQol was undertaken in order to measure the QOL of chronic psychiatric inpatients, and to identify the clinical, environmental, and lifestyle factors related to their QOL. The subjects were female patients diagnosed with schizophrenia who had been living in a psychiatric ward for a long time (their average age was 55.8 years). Their average score of EuroQol corresponded to that of people in the general population in their seventies and eighties. As for the clinical factors, psychiatric syndrome (BPRS) was related to QOL as a whole syndrome regardless of whether the syndrome was positive or negative. The QOL score of the patients with more severe psychiatric symptoms was lower than that of patients with less severe symptoms. as regards lifestyle, smokers had a higher QOL than non smokers.
