To determine whether paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (Paf) can be predicted during sinus rhythm in patients with ischemic heart disease (IHD), P wave-triggered signal-averaged electrocardiogram (SAE) was record-ed in 77 patients with IHD.

The patients were separated into two groups. Group I was composed of 15 patients with Paf and Group II of 62 without Paf. Filtered P wave duration (FPD), the root mean square voltage of the last 20msec (V20) and the duration of under 5p v (D 5) of the vector magnitude were measured.
