  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A questionnaire study in 5,060 male adult workers was performed in order to examine the relationship between essential hypertension and snoring. The responses of 2, 308 males (30-59 y.o.) out of the 5,060 adults were analyzed. After adjusting for age, body mass index and amount of daily alcohol consum-ption, it was found that the prevalence of hyperten-sion was more than two times as much among habitual snorers as among non-habitual snorers and non snorers (p<0.05: χ2 test). The pair matching case-control study for examining the relationship between hypertension and snoring was also performed with 213 pairs consisting of hypertensive and normotensive subjects selected from the 2,308 subjects : the subjects belonging to each pair were matched for age, body mass index, and amount of daily alcohol consumption. The odds ratio of habitual snoring vs. non habitual snoring was 1.91 (p <0. 01 : McNemar's test). This indicates that the risk of hypertension is 1. 91 times as much among habitual snorers as among others.

We conclude that habitual snoring is a risk factor of essential hypertension, and that it is independent of other risk factors such as age, obesity and amount of alcohol consumption.
