The pathophysiologic basis for ischemic-appear-ing exercise electrocardiograms in asymptomatic patients is unclear. This study was undertaken to assess the regional myocardial perfusion and the left ventricular performance during exercise-induced ST depression in asymptomatic patients.

The study group was made up of 33 asymptoma-tic patients with a positive treadmill exercise test (> 1mm ST depression). The mean age was 53±11 (SD) years. Twenty patients were male and 13 were female.

All patients exercised on a treadmill using the graded Bruce protocol and recieved 2mCi of thal-lium-201 during ST depression.
