Energy distribution during ejection period of the left ventricle was studied in 97 patients (pts) who underwent open heart surgery for correction of congenital heart diseases including ASD (15 pts), VSD (23 pts), PS (19 pts) and T/F (40 pts). The ratio of KE (kinetic energy) to SW (stroke work) is represented as ρU2/2AP or ρU2/2AP (ρ: blood density, U and U: mean and peak velocity, AP and AP: mean and peak arterial pressure) and is dimensionless. Since ρ/2 is aconstant, KE/SWcan be represented by U2/AP or U2/AP. AP and AP (mmHg) weremeasuredby pressure transducers. U and U (cm/sec) wereobtained by measuring aortic flow with an electromagnetic fiowmeter. U2/AP and U2/AP averaged 15 and 125 in ASD, 11, 94 in VSD, 9, 79 in PS and 4, 38 in T/F respectively after theintracardiac repair. U2/AP and U2/AP showedsignificantly lower values in TIF than in otherdiseases. U2/AP and U2/AP indicated thekineticand pressure energy distribution during the ejection period of the left ventricle and wereconsidered to be the indices showing the functional states of the left ventricle.
