Because cellular metabolism is adequately reflected in the microcirculation, attention to it is one of the best methods of determin-ing the efficiency of extracorporeal circula-tion.

In order to get an accurate picture of the state of the microcirculation, the subject under observation must be kept in as natural a condition as possible. To accomplish this, we have constructed a special type of perfu-sion chamber which we attached to the abdominal wall of dogs. The dogs'omentum was pulled through a small opening in the abdominal wall onto the stage of the micro-scope. To control and maintain temperature the chamber was perfused with Ringer's solution. The use of this device has enabled us to take color cinematographs and to make analyses by motion analyser and cds analy-ser.

Observation of the microcirculation during extracorporeal circulation under various con-ditions provided many patterns of microcir-culation, i. e., good flow, stasis, sludging, bleeding, plasma skimming, A-V fistula and embolus. We studied the relationship of these patterns with extracorporeal circula-tion.
