Clinical observations on various cardio-pulmonary patients were made with the following conclusions.
Cases of chronic obstructive pulmonary emphysema with ventilatory failure associated with increased pulmonary vascular resistance and increased pulmonary artery pressure showed hypercapnia. And both irritability and sensitivity of the respiratory center were decreased. Aminophylline administration was thought to be useful for the therapy of respiratory derangement of this type. In some emphysematous patients hypercapnia was decreased by adequate exercise.
