Diagnostic imaging of the gastrointestinal tract has been developed to be consistent with histopathological diagnoses. In particular, the development of magnifying and ultramagnifying endoscopes and image-enhanced endoscopy has led to remarkable progress in diagnostic imaging using endoscopes. Magnifying endoscopy enables endoscopists to detect microscopic changes and make a clinical diagnosis that is more closely related to the histopathological diagnosis, while also considering histopathological images and pathology. Furthermore, this trend will become more pronounced with increase in the widespread use of the recently introduced ultramagnifying endoscope. Under such circumstances, the information endoscopists seek from histopathological diagnoses of lesions resected under these situations is inevitably changing. Endoscopists and pathologists are required to pursue the facts while respecting each other on an equal footing or beyond, which is considered to become a driving force for new advances in medicine.
