We retrospectively compared the radiographic findings of colitis-associated neoplasia with sporadic cancer/adenoma in patients with ulcerative colitis. Morphologically, colitis-associated neoplasia was classified into flat elevated lesions(n=8)or protruding lesions(n=7). Sporadic cancer/adenoma was also classified into flat elevated lesions(n=4)and protruding lesions(n=2). Of the 12 flat elevated lesions, all 4 sporadic cancer/adenomas were clearly demarcated on radiography, whereas such radiographic characteristics were found in only 2 of the 8 colitis-associated neoplasias(p=0.06). Radiographically, most of the protruding colitis-associated neoplasias appeared as irregular masses composed of nodules of various sizes. Although further investigation should be mandatory, vague demarcation and obvious inequality of nodules on radiography may allow the differentiation of colitis-associated neoplasia from sporadic cancer/adenoma in patients with ulcerative colitis.
