We previously reported that eradication of Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori)reduced the risk of developing gastric cancer in patients with peptic ulcer diseases. In the present study, we further followed up our patients'group to investigate the occurrence and clinical features of gastric cancers that developed after cure of the infection.

The patients were followed for up to 15years(mean : 7.3years). During the follow-up, the risk of developing gastric cancer after the cure of infection(0.27%)was almost the same as we have previously reported. There was the same risk of developing gastric cancer of both the intestinal and diffuse types. The grade of gastric mucosal atrophy presented at the reception of eradication therapy was closely related to the risk of gastric cancer after the cure of infection.

It is very important to inform patients that the risk of gastric cancer remains for the long term after the cure of H. pylori infection and to offer them surveillance endoscopy.
