  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

A 57 year-old woman complaining of abdominal pain and bloody stool underwent sigmoidoscopy. Edema, erosions and bleeding were observed in the sigmoid colon. Histologically the biopsy specimens taken from the sigmoid colon showed mucosal atrophy, lymphoid cell infiltration and thickened vascular wall (H・E staining). Amyloid deposition was histologically confirmed in the thickened vascular wall and lamina propria using Congo-red staining. This patient was diagnosed as secondary amyloidosis resulting from rheumatoid arthritis by taking biopsy specimens through sigmoidoscope. Therefore, colonofiberscopy could be, as in this case, quite useful to detect amyloidosis.
