  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

An infection with Terranova larvae, hitherto unreported in the literature, was recently experienced in a 31-year old wcman. She had complained of severe epigastric pain of ten days' duration after eating fish (Pleurogrammus azonus) slightly pickled with vinegar. Roentgenologic and endoscopic examinations revealed a nematode larva, penetrated head foremost into the mucosal layer of the curvature in the angular region, and then this worm was taken out with biopsy clipper. The larva in this case was identified as Terranova decipiens.

We would like to propose that the abdominal symptoms, caused by infection of Anisakinae larva in the human alimentary canal, be named generically as “heterocheilidiasis” as defined by Schaum and Muller, and the name of the worm be added only when it has been identified as Anisakinae larva.
