  • Look Inside

Three hundred sixty-four cases of combined peptic ulcers, experienced in Kitasato University Hospital July 1971 to June 1977, were analyzed for any characteristics of the lesions.

 1. The combined peptic ulcers were found predominantly in men (88. 5%) with a peak incidence in the age group 40~49.

 2. The gastric lesions in combined ulcer cases were quite similar in shape and number to those in sole gastric ulcer cases, but the ratio of ulcers located around the gastric angle was very high in the former group.

 3. The combined ulcer cases showed hyperacidic and hyperkinetic functions similar to those in sole duodenal ulcer cases.

 4. The healing rate of gastric lesions in combined ulcer was worse than was expected: 37.5% after 3 months and 59.3% after 6 months. This fact suggested that these lesions were intractable than those in the sole gastric ulcer cases.

 5. In combined active ulcers, the duodenal lesions showed faster healing tendency as compared with the gastric lesions.

 6. Several cases were found wherein gastric ulcer has newly developed during the follow-up study of duodenal ulcer. There was no tendency to the contrary.

 7. Gastric cancer combined with duodenal ulcer was found in 11 cases, corresponding to 2.4% of all resected gastric cancer cases.
