  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The attempt to diagnose intestinal metaplasia by means of endoscopy is quite old. It can be traced back to the period of the invention of the gastrocamera. But the fact that the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia was made possible by routine examination is, we believe, due to researches in the specific type and specific-like type of intestinal metaplasia. Yet, the incidence of such changes were very low, and a majority of intestinal metaplasia were impossibe to diagnose.

With the introductiun of the methylene blue dying method, though, many of the intestinal metapiasia came to be easily endoscopically. This is a rather recent observation. Therefore, it is still too early to discuss the historical transfiguration of intestinal metaplasia from the point of endoscopy.

In this paper, emphasis is placed on the changes in the diagnosis of intestinal metaplasia. Limiting it to intestinal metaplasia capable of being diagnosed by routine examination of endoscopy, changes were traced over a period of ten years. But due to the fact there were only a small number of case, fixed tendencies could not be observed.
