One hundred and forty-one submucosal invasive cancers were classified into ninety polypoid growth (PG) type (63.8%) and 51. non-polypoid growth (NPG) type (36.2%) . The mean size of NPG type was 12.9 mm which is smaller than that of PG type. However, as a rule, NPG type submucosal cancers able to be seen with the naked eye were usually 10 mm in diameter. They also showed a strong tendency to invade the submucosa, and were essentially different from PG type submucosal cancers. The primary NPG type mucosal carcinoma was either a depressed lesion or a flat superficial lesion. The primary mucosal carcinoma of NPG type was depressed or flat lesion of superficial type.
