  • Look Inside

A 39-year-old male was admitted with the complaint of right lower abdominal pain. Colonoscopy revealed vascular ectasia with multiple red spots and telangiectasia without bleeding in the cecum and ascending colon. In addition to this, telangiectatic lesions were observed in the terminal ileum and the sigmoid colon. Gastroduodenoscopy revealed a duodenal telangiectatic lesion in the bulb. Superior mesenteric arteriography showed an arteriovenous malformation supplied by branches of the ileocolic artery. Resected specimens showed numerous, small dilated vessels in the mucosa and submucosa, and these histological findings indicated vascular ectasia of the colon.

In conclusion, colonoscopy is effective for the diagnosis of the vascular disease. The rate of colorectal vascular ectasia was 1.2% (308/25,576) on colonoscopy over a period of 11 years.
