  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We have recently encountered a minute esophageal cancer which disappeared due to biopsy. A 75-year-old man was referred to our hospital for examination of epigastralgia. Endoscopic examination revealed a small irregular red-spot in the middle esophagus where one of two biopsied specimens obtained led to a diagnosis of moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. The affected region was treated by endoscopic mucosal resection. In resected specimens, only a small focus of atypical epithelium was noted, and no cancerous focus was found despite thorough pathological examination. It was suggested that high magnification endoscopic examination was useful in detecting such a minute carcinoma of the esophagus.
