The progression in technology of molecular biology and the development of new methodology have made the figure of gastric cancer clear. According to many previous reports about the biological malignant potential of gastric cancer from the clinical point of view, large numbers of intriguing genes have been focused on up to the present day. We found that the following genetic and epigenetic alterations determine the malignant behavior of gastric cancer, such as oncogenes, suppressor genes, cell cycle related genes (p53, p27 and skp2 etc.), proteases (MMPs) and its inhibitors (TIMPs), adhesion molecules (E-cadherin), angiogenic factors, and chemokines and so on. In the present report, we review the latest papers that are closely related to the malignant potential of gastric cancer.

It is difficult to predict the malignant behavior or prognosis of gastric cancer cases by information about individual genes. However, we introduce a new powerful method, cDNA microarray, which can predict clinical malignant behavior or prognosis of gastric cancer cases.
