Abstract

 Introduction: This study aimed to clarify what first-year nursing students learn about Communication in basic nursing education through an Objective Structured Clinical Exam (OSCE) that focusing on communication during nursing skills.

 Methods: The OSCE was conducted for 50 first-year nursing students with a simulated patient. A questionnaire survey was administered after the OSCE, and the content was qualitatively analyzed regarding “the lessons learned as self-addressed issues related to communication”.

 Results: All 50 first-year nursing students responded to the questions. Seven categories were identified as learnings regarding Communication for nursing students: [Effectiveness of nonverbal Communication], [Adjusting the communication environment], [Clarifying the purpose of Communication], [Awareness communication contents and processes], [Understanding the subject's illness and condition], [Understanding the subject's needs as a consumer], and [Communication devices tailored to the subject and the situation].

 Discussion: Formative assessment using the OS CE, which focusing on communication with nursing techniques early in basic nursing education, leads to practical education and facilitates educational effects for improving students'communication skills.
