Abstract

Objective: This study clarified the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake over the subsequent ten years on survivors during their high school years.

Methods: An interview survey was conducted with 10 research participants using a lifeline chart, and the content was then analyzed.

Results: From the narratives of the 10 participants, six categories were extracted regarding the impact during the first five years after the disaster experience. Specifically, these included considering future paths prompted by the disaster, taking action to help others, and experiencing conflict over being perceived as disaster victims outside the affected area. Regarding the impact five to ten years after the disaster, six categories were identified. Examples include drawing strength from disaster experiences in times of crisis and changes in perception of the meaning of those experiences over time.

Conclusions: The findings clarified that experiencing a disaster during high school has long-term effects and demonstrated that these experiences are subject to personal meaning-making. The results emphasize the importance of support that respects the autonomy of adolescents and young adults, particularly the need to provide career guidance and assistance tailored to their developmental stage and future after graduation.
