認知症に対する早期診断・早期治療の重要性は，薬物療法や診断技術が近年，急速に進歩していることにより，ますます高まっている．歩行速度の低下は認知症リスクを高めることが知られており，認知症の前段階の1つとしてmotoric cognitive risk syndromeという概念が提唱されている．認知症疾患によっては特徴的な運動・行動障害を有することがあり，鑑別診断に役立つ．認知症者に対する運動療法は認知機能の維持のために推奨されている．認知症を有する運動器疾患患者に対して運動器リハビリテーションを実施する際には，その効果を阻害するさまざまな要因に対応・配慮して計画する必要がある．
