Abstract Purpose:To investigate anonymized dates of clinical events in case reports in Japanese ophthalmology journals.

Materials and methods:We surveyed case reports in six major Japanese-written ophthalmology journals.

Results:A preliminary study of 742 case reports in three-year period(2021-2023) revealed three categories to describe dates for clinical events, being 171(23.0%) by calendar-based dates, 383(51.6%) by non-calendar-based dates, and 188(25.3%) by anonymized dates. Of 3,459 case reports over a 15-year period between 2010 and 2024, 326(9.4%) anonymized dates of clinical events. Anonymization of dating first appeared in 2011, followed by a steady increase in number after 2020 up to 66 cases in 2024. The trend has been common in the six journals, in which dates were anonymized by a combination of XYZ symbols such as the year X(20XX, 201X and 202X), month Y, and day Z.

Conclusions:The recent decade has witnessed a trend of anonymization of dating in case reports in ophthalmology journals.
