　単純な虫垂炎の場合，外科医は必要最小限の皮切で手術を行おうと考える．そこで，究極の方法として「手術瘢痕の無い虫垂切除術」を考案した．それが「臍に皮切をおく虫垂切除術」である．すなわち，臍の内周に皮切をおけば，治癒後，手術瘢痕は臍の模様に吸収され判別ができなくなるわけである．臍の皮切を虫垂の位置に近づけるために，腎盂鉤とリール式牽引器を利用した．臍に皮切をおく虫垂切除術は，これまでに報告が無い．

Here we introduce a novel method of “Appendectomy through a single umbilical incision.” In this method, about two thirds circumferential umbilical incision is placed inside the umbilicus and surgeons can reach the peritoneal cavity just below the incision. This umbilical incision is retracted toward anterior superior iliac spine by a wire retractor. The umbilical incision is dilated in an oval shape and is relocated into the right lower quadrant.
