自己免疫とは免疫系が自己を非自己と誤認して応答することである．膨大な研究にもかかわらず詳細な病態生理は解明されていないが，獲得免疫のみならず自然免疫も多分に関与し，両者の協働が重要であることが近年明らかになりつつある．免疫学における多くの知見がマウスから得られているが，ヒトの自己免疫疾患と疾患モデルマウスとの間には複数の相違点があるため，ヒトにおける自己免疫発症の機序を明らかにすることが今後の免疫学の研究における大きな課題の1つである．

Autoimmunity is an abnormal state in which the immune system recognizes self-tissues as foreign agents and attacks them.　The detailed pathophysiology of autoimmunity has not been well elucidated so far despite intensive study.　Recently, a lot of new findings in immunology suggest that innate immunity has a significant role in the development of autoimmunity and augments adaptive immunity reacting to self-tissues.　Although there are several differences between human autoimmune diseases and mouse disease models, most findings of autoimmunity have been derived from mouse studies.　It is our challenging goal to decipher the Enigma of human autoimmunity.
