　The observations on Japanese hospitals reported in this paper are based on a visit to Japan made during the late months of 1956 as a consultant appointed by the World Health Organization at the request of the Japanese Government.

　The Japanese Government, through the staffs of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, of the National Institute of Hospital Administration, and representatives of the Japanese Hospital Association, were extremely helpful to this observer during the period (October 29 through November 17, 1956) spent in Japan.
