The purpose of our study was to evaluate the effect of a ruby laser on the epidermis, especially on the melanocyte activity, by using DOPA reaction.

Microscopically, the skin specimens removed after one pulse irradiation of 1 joule ruby laser, showed varying of melanocyte activity and the increased pigment in the epidermis. At the impact area, the pigment of the epider-mis was increased, and the deformed melano-cytes, which consisted of only cell bodies without dendritic processes, were observed, on the contrary, at the non-irradiated area, all melanocyts were normal. It was considered that the distortion of melanocytes was rela-ted to the cellular necrosis which was caused by the heat absoroption in melanin pigment in the dendritic processes.
