  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Chemical transmitters are released at synapses and stimulate respective receptors at postsynaptic membranes in the nervous system. When the nerve impulses reach the nerve endings and neurotransmitters are released at synapses, the signal transduction occurs at the plasma membranes. Consequently, the levels of the second messengers such as cAMP, cGMP, Ca2+, diacylglycerol and inositol trisphosphate increase in the nerve cells. The target substances for these active compounds may be protein kinases if not all. Therefore, the actions of the 2nd messengers may be mediated through the activation of protein kinases.

Protein phosphorylation may be involved in many kinds of cellular functions in the nervous system. There are many 2nd messenger-dependent and independent-protein kinases in the tissue, which are classified into Ser/Thr kinases and tyrosine kinases. More than 50 phosphoproteins are found in the brain, among which structural and functional proteins are included.
