  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Receptor mediated hydrolysis of phosphatidylinositol is a common mechanism involved in transmembrane signalling through which inositol 1, 4, 5-triphosphate (IP3) and diacylglycerol (DG) are generated in the cell. Both of these products of phospholipid metabolism have intracellular second messenger functions with DG formation leading to activation of protein kinase C (PKC) and IP3 stimulating Ca2+ release from intracellular stores in the endoplasmic reticulum, thus initiating the reactions that change biochemical state in the cell.
