　これまで，頭頂葉の機能の研究は，ヒトでの神経心理学的研究と霊長類を用いたニューロン活動の記録実験を中心に行われ，特にニューロン活動の記録実験によって，機能マップの作成とその基盤となるニューロンの性質が明らかにされてきた。一方，近年，PET，機能的MRIによるイメージングの研究が盛んに行われるようになり，ヒトにおいても，これまでの神経心理学的研究では捉えきれなかった頭頂葉での機能の局在がわかりつつある。本稿では，イメージング研究による頭頂葉の機能局在について概説する。

　Functional role of the parietal lobe has examined psychophysiologically in humans and neurophysiologically in monkeys. Especially, single unit recording experiments in monkeys have revealed precious properties of neurons in the parietal lobe and constructed the functional map of the parietal lobe based on those results. On the other hand, recent development of functional imaging technique can allow us to understand the functional map of the human parietal lobe, which could not be achieved by traditional neuropsychological studies. In this chapter, the functional map of the parietal lobe which has been elucidated by recent imaging studies is reviewed.
