  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Platelet-derived microparticles(PMPs)are released from activated platelets. PMPs increase coagulability and cell adhesion, both of which are key factors for capillary occlusion. We quantitated the level of PMPs in 92 patients of type II diabetes mellitus. The series comprised 67 cases with retinopathy and 25 cases without. The type of retinopathy was simple in 13 cases, preproliferative in 25,and proliferative in 29. The level of PMPs in the whole series averaged 507±15/104plt. This value was much higher than 200-350±15/104plt as assumed in normal persons. There was no significant correlation between the level of PMPs and the the degree of retinopathy. The level of PMPs averaged 582±27/104plt in 24 eyes with capillary nonperfusion and 426±23/104plt in 30 eyes without nonperfusion. The difference was significant. The findings suggest that increased levels of PMPs may accelerate diabetic retinopathy.
