要旨　慢性胃炎を，臨床診断学の立場から，胃粘膜の欠損と再生の病態像と考えた．この見地から，胃粘膜の萎縮性変化と表層性変化について，病態生理および内視鏡所見を検討した．特に，最近の研究から，胃粘膜の萎縮現界の進展，腸上皮化生，更に表層性変化の発赤についての成績を報告した．しかし，われわれの研究を含めて，慢性胃炎の内視鏡的診断学は，まだまだこれからの学問という感じがする．

　We have defined the chronic gastritis as the pathophysiological phenomenon of defect and regeneration on the gastric mucosa. From this view point, atrophic and superficial changes of gastric mucosa were studied and reported pathophysidogically and endoscopically. Especially, the development of atrophic border on the gastric mucosa, the intestinal metaplasia and then redness in superficial changes of gastric mucosa were reported from our studies. However, when we discussed recent reports including our studies concerning chronic gastritis it was considered that the endoscopic diagnostics for chronic gastritis was very incomplete yet and had to be made progress rapidly.
