要旨　小腸カプセル内視鏡の技術を応用したGiven Imagingの大腸カプセル内視鏡（PillCam^® COLON）が2006年から臨床使用された．PillCam^® COLONと通常大腸内視鏡との欧州共同比較研究の結果が2009年夏に発表されたが，感度・特異度ともに通常大腸内視鏡に劣り，よい評価は得られなかった．前処置も非常に強力で厳しいものがあり，大腸内視鏡に優れた日本ではまだ汎用できる段階とは言えない．しかし，2009年秋に新型大腸カプセル内視鏡（PillCam^® COLON 2）が発表され，今後の進歩が期待される．

　On the basis of the technological development and the accumulated experience with small bowel capsule endoscope, the PillCam^® COLON capsule endoscope（Given Imaging）became available in 2006. Results of a study comparing capsule endoscopy with optical colonoscopy for the detection of colorectal polyps and cancers, were released in the summer of 2009. The results showed that PillCam^® COLON's sensitivity for detecting colonic lesions was low as compared with the use of optical colonoscopy. In addition, preparation before use and the process during use of capsule endoscopy is severe, so this type of PillCam^® COLON would not be well accepted in Japan. However, a new PillCam^® COLON 2 will be available in the immediate future. We expect this new PillCam^® COLON 2. To be better and more congenial for doctors and patients.
