はじめに

　先の大戦における戦没者遺骨収集において、日米の実務家や研究者が互いに協力することは重要である。しかしながら、これまでに米国において戦没者遺骨収集を担っている国防総省捕虜・行方不明者調査局（Defense POW/MIA^※1 Accounting Agency〔DPAA〕）の取り組みを概説した日本語の文献はない。本稿は、戦没者の遺骨収集に携わる日本の研究者や実務家等を対象として、DPAAの歴史や日本との関係、日々の実務、すなわち遺骨収集から個人識別、特に安定同位体分析をはじめとする科学的鑑定、ご遺族へのご遺骨の返還がどのように行われているのかについて紹介するものである。

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency（DPAA）, a part of the U.S. Department of Defense, is responsible for achieving the Fullest Possible Accounting of U.S. military personnel who went missing during past conflicts, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, and the Gulf War/Libya operations. To fulfill this mission, DPAA works in close cooperation with international partners, including Japan and other countries across Asia and the Pacific, such as Republic of Korea（South Korea）, Republic of the Philippines, Myanmar, Socialist Republic of Viet Nam（Vietnam）, Kingdom of Cambodia, Kingdom of Thailand, and Papua New Guinea, as well as European nations including Germany, France, and Italy. In identifying remains from World War II, cooperation between Japan and the United States is essential. However, no previous article has introduced the DPAA in Japanese. This article provides an overview of the DPAA's history, including its relationship with Japan, and the procedures for the collection, identification, and return of remains to their families.
