Interventions for patients who are scheduled to undergo an invasive medical procedure have come to be known as ‘prehabilitation.’ Research concerning prehabilitation has been conducted(primarily for cancer patients)in several fields of medicine, including thoracic and abdominal surgery, orthopedic surgery, and cardiac surgery. A proposed definition of prehabilitation is ‘a process from diagnosis to surgery, consisting of one or more preoperative interventions of exercise, nutrition, psychological strategies and respiratory training, that aims to enhance functional capacity and physiological reserve to allow patients to withstand surgical stressors, improve postoperative outcomes, and facilitate recovery.’ This review of prehabilitation is written from the perspective of rehabilitation medicine and discusses both how age-related impairments should be understood and how training prescriptions are designed. The protocol of a clinical study conducted at Nara Medical University is explained as a practical example of the implementation of prehabilitation. It is becoming increasingly apparent that the provision of prehabilitation to patients through multidisciplinary intervention enhances their resilience and is a vital approach for improving the quality of life of patients undergoing invasive medical procedures in Japan’s aging society.
