The Postoperative Pain Management Team Fee was newly established in the 2022 revision of the medical fee schedule(Reiwa 4). This new Team Fee is designed to promote high-quality pain management for postoperative patients. The fee’s criteria are used to evaluate the pain management provided by postoperative pain-management teams. The involvement of such teams is expected to improve patients’ early mobilization, reduce postoperative complications, and shorten hospital stays. However, it remains necessary to investigate and verify actual improvements in patient outcomes related to the new fee.

The accumulation of evidence is thus essential for the determination of the precise impacts of the interventions conducted by postoperative pain-management teams. Further evidence is also required―not only for the acute phase but also regarding the interventions’ contributions to the subacute phase and the prevention/management of chronic postoperative pain―in order to consider additional requirements and criteria for the new fee. It is thus hoped that the establishment of this fee will serve as a catalyst for advancing the collection of evidence related to the roles of postoperative pain-management teams.
